CHAPTER 16

Doug left Esther’s house, walked down the deteriorated stairs, passed the pots holding dead flower roots, and onto the short stone walkway in front of her home. He’d hoped to feel lighter, like a weight had been lifted. He had expected to feel as if a burden had been removed from his subconscious, that there was an explanation for all of this, but instead of answers he was left only with additional questions.

He found his home empty when he entered. He wasn’t sure how long he’d been gone. There was a note on the edge of the breakfast bar that read: “Took Janie to my parents’ house. Be back in a little while. Or, come and join us.”

Doug removed a beer from the fridge and sat at the table in the kitchen. He pondered quietly as he sipped and stared at nothing, his eyes blurring as his thoughts took over.

Maybe I’m going about this all wrong. Whatever is here obviously wants to communicate. It just doesn’t want to communicate with me.

He thought about the voice recorder sitting in the top drawer of his desk and about what other strategies he could try.

He sat up straight and looked around as a sudden realization came over him.

“Maybe I don’t have to be sneaky around it,” he said aloud. He took another sip, swallowed and asked, “Do you want to talk to me?”

No answer.

Then an idea seeded itself into his brain and quickly bloomed into something with plausibility. He took one more sip, stood from the table, and headed for the study. He felt a renewed determination to find answers, to try to communicate with whatever was making its home in Janie’s bedroom. He crossed the threshold between the kitchen and the hallway, passed Janie’s bedroom—

What was that?

He stopped in the hallway. From the edge of his vision, barely visible on the fringe, there had been a woman. He felt the small hairs on his arms raise and curl over as they pressed against the inside of his sweater.

Did I just see that?

The image began to manifest in the eye of his mind, began to take shape. A woman had been sitting on the bed. On Janie’s bed.

She’d looked at him.

Doug stood in the hallway, unsure whether to turn and look into Janie’s room or turn and run out of the house. His heart now raced, but he breathed slowly and with control.

I have to see.

He relaxed his hands, realizing he’d been clenching them into fists, and turned around. As he walked back toward Janie’s room, the image became clearer in his mind: Blue shirt, collared. Long sleeves. Long, black hair. Black pants. Conservative-looking shoes.

And were those feathers on her pants?

As he reached the doorway to her room, he simultaneously hoped the woman was gone, but also that he would see her. He turned the corner.

The room was empty. He released a long breath, unaware he’d even been holding it. His eyes quickly and thoroughly scanned the entire visible space of her room.
